Design excellence
A Design Excellence Competition was undertaken on the RPA Redevelopment to enhance the design of the new hospital building and facilities. Design excellence is a term used to describe the outcome of high quality architectural, urban, place and landscape design.
With a focus on connecting to RPA’s strong identity and connection to culture, history and heritage and providing opportunities for landscape and urban space at the campus, the design excellence process will seek to improve the physical structure and urban environment of the RPA Campus, improving the overall experience for RPA’s patients, staff, visitors and community.
To achieve design excellence, the RPA Redevelopment was supported by a Design Excellence Strategy that was delivered in accordance with the NSW Government Architect’s Better Placed Strategy and Design Excellence Competition Guidelines.
The RPA Redevelopment included early and enabling works in advance of main works, to help achieve early additional clinical capacity for the RPA Hospital and prepare the site for main works.
Enabling works
Enabling works commenced in November 2022, with Indigenous construction company Barpa appointed as the enabling works contractor. A majority Indigenous owned company, Barpa prides themselves on respectful Indigenous engagement and strives to make a positive difference for Australia’s First Peoples.
An exciting milestone for the project, the beginning of enabling works was celebrated with a traditional smoking ceremony led by Aboriginal Elders and knowledge holders on Gadigal Country.
The enabling works package was completed in late 2023.
Early works
Early works commenced in 2021 as part of the NSW Government’s accelerated program. One of the first projects to be completed was the New Kidney Centre RPA. This new purpose-built facility is located in the Professor Marie Bashir Centre (PMBC). The Renal Dialysis service moved into the new facility in December 2021.
The RPA Kidney Centre is the new home of RPA’s dialysis service. The new purpose built unit provides care for dialysis patients in a beautiful and comfortable healthcare environment. This new unit is the final stage of the RPA Kidney Centre which brings together outpatient clinics, satellite dialysis, peritoneal dialysis and home training in one location within the Professor Marie Bashir Centre.
The works to fit out the new Kidney Centre were carried out by Sydney Local Health District’s Capital
Asset, Property and Engineering team. The result is a fresh, more spacious and welcoming environment with new equipment.

The new $940 million Royal Prince Alfred Hospital redevelopment is on track to deliver first-class health services. The main works contractor CPB Contractors was appointed in March 2024.
CPB Contractors has developed a strong reputation for its expertise in delivering successful projects including the redevelopment of Campbelltown and Nepean hospitals. Their expert team will draw on their considerable experience for their design and planning role at RPA.
This is the most significant investment in RPA’s 140-year history to support the world-leading services provided at RPA for the 740,000 people who live in Sydney Local Health District and the more than 1 million people who come into the District each day to work, study and visit.
Construction on the RPA Hospital redevelopment is expected to be completed in 2029.
